Water Cylinder Insulation

A lot of energy is wasted around hot water cyclinders if they are not wrapped in insulation material. This happens even if hot water is not being used, and is called "standing loss".

Standing losses can amount to around 2kwh/day or $130/year.

Most new hot water cyclinders are fairly well insulated - these are categorised as 'A-Grade'.

Cylinders marked B, C or D-grade are those manufactured prior to 2003. It is these cylinders that will benefit from a cylinder wrap insulation.

Hot water cylinder wraps are available in wool and fibreglass.

Benefits of Hot Water Cylinder Insulation

The benefits of wool insulation include:

  • Maximises energy use
  • Enhances the performance of hot water system
  • Easy to install
  • Inexpensive

Natural wool insulation Is a preferred insulation option for people with asthma and allergies.

Installation

Hot water cylinder insulation wraps are very simple to install.

CAUTION:If installing an insulation wrap on a gas cylinder ensure there is adequate ventilation in accordance with the relevant standards.

A cylinder wrap costs between $NZ60 and $NZ100 depending on the size.
