Polystyrene Insulation

Polystyrene insulation is fairly common and a ver effective synthetic insulation.

Polystyrene is a dense, lightweight material that is a poor conductor of heat. It is formed into rigid boards and loose fill instead of mats or biscuits used for fiberglass or wool insulation.

Polystyrene is manufactured from petrochemicals either by extruding or expanding the raw materials. Some polystyrene insulation is made by recycling polystyrene from other sources.

R-Values

The typical R-Values used in 100% natural wool insulation are:

  • Ceiling insulation: R3.2
  • Wall insulation: R2.5

Benefits of Polystyrene Insulation

  • Moderate cost
  • Moisture-resistant
  • Good thermal insulation properties
