Kitchen Design Measures & Dimensions
When designing a new kitchen, apart from the layout design being
functional, the measurements of certain aspects make a kitchen ergonomically
friendly.
Countertops
- Height - Countertops should be 2-3" below
the elbow. The standard is 36", but do range between 28" - 45".
Whilst a custom height may suit you, it may also affect the resale
value of the house.
- Thickness - Countertops are normally 1 ½
- 2" thick, depending on composition.
- Spacing - Always leave at least 38" between
countertops, or if it is a passage, at least 64".
Kitchen Base Cabinet Standard Sizes
- Height - American base cabinets are normally
30 ½" tall. European base cabinets are 28".
- Height of Baking Area - A baking area should
be 5-6" below the elbow.
- Toekicks - American toekicks are usually 4
½", European toekicks are 7"
Kitchen Wall Cabinet Standard Sizes
- Height Above Countertop - Wall cabinets are
placed 15-20" from the countertops
